Deinosuchus

Deinosuchus is an extinct genus of eusuchian—either an alligatoroid crocodilian or a stem-group crocodilian—that lived during the Late Cretaceous, roughly 82 to 73 million years ago. Its first fossils were uncovered in North Carolina during the 1850s, and the genus was formally named in 1909. While knowledge of this animal is still incomplete, recent discoveries of better skull and body fossils have improved scientists’ understanding of this enormous predator.
Far larger than any modern crocodile or alligator, the biggest Deinosuchus individuals exceeded 9 meters (30 feet) in total length. Its overall build resembled that of its smaller relatives, though its skull was proportionally longer. It possessed large, robust teeth built for crushing, and its back was covered with thick, dome-shaped bony plates called osteoderms. One study suggested Deinosuchus could live up to 50 years, growing at a rate similar to modern crocodilians but sustaining that growth over a much longer period.
Fossils have been found in 12 U.S. states, including Texas, Montana, and many along the East Coast, as well as in northern Mexico. It lived on both sides of the Western Interior Seaway and was an opportunistic apex predator in the coastal regions of eastern North America. Deinosuchus reached its largest size in western habitats, but eastern populations were far more abundant. Whether these two groups represent separate species remains debated. It was likely capable of killing and eating large dinosaurs, and also fed on sea turtles, fish, and other aquatic and terrestrial prey.
**Discovery and naming**
In 1858, geologist Ebenezer Emmons described two large fossil teeth from the Tar Heel Formation in Bladen County, North Carolina. He assigned them to *Polyptychodon*, which he then thought was a crocodilian reptile. Later work showed *Polyptychodon* was actually a pliosaur, a marine reptile. The teeth were thick, slightly curved, and covered with vertically grooved enamel; Emmons gave them the species name *P. rugosus*. Though not recognized at the time, these were probably the first scientifically described Deinosuchus remains. Another large tooth likely from Deinosuchus, found in Tar Heel sediments in neighboring Sampson County, was named *Polydectes biturgidus* by Edward Drinker Cope in 1869.

The genus was named Deinosuchus hatcheri by W. J. Holland in 1909, from Greek δεινός meaning 'terrible' and σοῦχος meaning 'crocodile'.
