Eoraptor

Eoraptor was a small, lightweight dinosaur that belongs to the early sauropodomorph group. It ranks among the earliest known dinosaurs and early sauropodomorphs, living between about 231 and 228 million years ago during the Late Triassic. Its home was Western Gondwana, in what is now northwestern Argentina. The only species in this genus is *Eoraptor lunensis*, first described in 1993. Scientists know it from one nearly complete, well-preserved skeleton and several partial ones. Its teeth came in different shapes, indicating it ate both plants and animals.
The first bones of this primitive dinosaur turned up in 1991, discovered by paleontologists Ricardo Martínez and Paul Sereno during fieldwork for the University of Chicago and the University of San Juan. The main specimen, PVSJ 512, was found in muddy siltstone from the Cancha de Bochas Member of the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina. That formation’s fossils date to the Carnian stage of the Triassic, around 235 to 228 million years ago. Collecting the holotype took nearly 12 months. It was then sent to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, where William F. Simpson and Bob Masek prepared it. The fossil first went on display in Chicago, later returned to San Juan, Argentina, and now resides at the Museum of Natural Sciences.
The genus *Eoraptor* was named and described in 1993 by Paul Sereno, Catherine Forster, Raymond R. Rogers, and Alfredo M. Monetta. The name comes from the Greek *eós* (ἠώς), meaning “dawn,” pointing to its primitive nature, and the Latin *raptor*, meaning “plunderer,” a nod to its presumed carnivorous habits and grasping hands. The species name *lunensis* combines the Latin *luna* (“moon”) and the suffix *-ensis* (“inhabitant”), referring to its discovery site: the Valle de la Luna (“Valley of the Moon”), a place named for its dry, otherworldly look. So *Eoraptor lunensis* means “dawn plunderer from the Valley of the Moon.”
This dinosaur was small, with known specimens measuring 1.2 to 1.3 meters (3.9–4.3 feet) long and weighing around 10 kilograms (22 pounds) or less. Its skull was lightly built with a slightly enlarged nostril opening.
