Euparkeria

Triassic archosauriform reptile close to archosaur ancestry.

Euparkeria is an extinct reptile from the Triassic period of South Africa. Its name means "Parker's good animal," honoring W. K. Parker. This genus belongs to the archosauriforms, a group close to the ancestry of Archosauria—the lineage that includes crocodilians, pterosaurs, and dinosaurs (including birds). Nearly complete skeletons have been found in the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone (also called the Burgersdorp Formation) within the Karoo Basin. This zone is roughly 247 million years old, dating to either the latest Early Triassic (late Olenekian) or earliest Middle Triassic (early Anisian).

Euparkeria is one of the most studied and discussed non-archosaur archosauriforms. It was a small, carnivorous reptile with a boxy skull, slender limbs, and two rows of tiny, teardrop-shaped bony scutes along its backbone. As a eucrocopod, it was among the reptiles most closely related to true crown-group archosaurs, based on specializations in its ankle and hindlimbs. Its hind legs were slightly longer than its front legs, which once suggested it might have been able to rear up on two legs as a facultative biped. This idea built on older studies that saw Euparkeria as a close relative of fully bipedal early dinosaurs. However, its normal movement was likely quadrupedal, with a semi-erect posture similar to a crocodilian's high walk. Biomechanical analyses now indicate it could not manage even brief periods of bipedal activity.

**History and naming**

In the late 1800s, South African paleontologist Alfred Brown collected small reptiles from beds thought to be Upper Triassic near Aliwal North, South Africa. British paleontologist D. M. S. Watson first studied this collection in 1912, naming all the material *Mesosuchus browni*. But South African paleontologist Robert Broom quickly doubted this identification in 1913. After further examination, Broom found two separate taxa. One resembled the rhynchocephalian *Howesia* and was described in detail by Watson; Broom made its skull the lectotype of *Mesosuchus*. The other, thought to be close to *Ornithosuchus*, Broom named *Euparkeria capensis*. The genus name honors Broom’s former professor William Kitchen Parker, combining the Greek prefix "eu-" (meaning "true" or "good") with the Latin suffix "-ia." In the late 1900s, South African palaeontologist Alfred Brown collected small reptiles from beds near Aliwal North. British palaeontologist D. M. S. Watson named the material Mesosuchus browni in 1912, but Robert Broom in 1913 identified two taxa, naming the second Euparkeria capensis. The genus name honors Broom's former professor William Kitchen Parker, with the species name referring to the Cape of Good Hope. Broom described Euparkeria in greater detail later in 1913, considering it a thecodont possibly close to dinosaur origins. After Brown's death, the South African Museum acquired his collection; Sidney Henry Haughton studied it in 1922, identifying most material as Euparkeria. Zoologist Rosalie F. Ewer fully prepared the specimens by 1965 and attempted to locate the original locality, identifying a probable site in the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone.
